AOMS offers
many services to industry, both onshore and offshore, in the demanding area of
occupational health and emergency medical services.
Our Organization
AOMS operates from a fully dedicated
occupational medical facility in St. John's which is equipped and computerized to
accommodate the provision of occupational medical services, as well as the administrative
/ accounting aspects needed to provide these services efficiently.
Dr. O'Shea is a full-time occupational medical consultant
with the organization and provides consultancy services to most of our clients, as well as
providing medical control and occupational medical advice to all other health care staff.
He is a fully certified occupational physician of the Canadian Board of Occupational
Medicine, June 1995, having received his Associate Membership of the Canadian Board of
Occupational Medicine in 1990.
There are four other physicians in the AOMS
office in St. John's, Dr. Charles McVicker, Dr. S.A. Walker, Dr. Natalie
Battcock and Dr. Gene Thomas. We
utilize the expertise of a specialized physician, Dr. Ken Ledez, who is an expert in
hyperboric and diving medicine, and who is significantly experienced in the area of
offshore medicine. He provides ongoing technical advice and support to our organization,
as well as performing independent and pre-employment medical
examinations. He assists us in the setting up of remote medical services in terms of acute
medical emergencies, trauma management, etc. He is a specialist in the field of
anaesthesia and aeromedicine and assists us in this regard also.
We have established a network of designated examining
physicians across the island of Newfoundland and in Labrador as well as in the Maritimes
and in other provinces throughout Canada. These physicians perform pre-employment medicals
and independent medical assessments on our behalf for our clients and report directly to
the occupational medical advisor in the AOMS head office in St. John's.
They are provided with client specific and AOMS examining physician
guidelines to ensure adherence to the principles of practice of occupational medicine.
Other Associations
Because of our clients' needs, we have formalized
associations with other health care providers across the province and are about to
undertake the same process in the Maritimes. We have, for example, formalized
relationships with Physiotherapy Associated here in St. John's, Gander Physiotherapy, and
East Coast physiotherapy Associates in Corner Brook. We utilize Occupational Therapy
services such as Functional Capacity Evaluations, work hardening, fitness testing etc. when
necessary and have formalized relationships with Integrated Occupational Health Services
in St. John's, F.I.T. for Work in Grand Falls and F.I.T. for Work in Corner Brook. We have
developed associations with vocational rehabilitation experts, Provincial Psychological
Services here in St. John's to assist in the areas of vocational rehabilitation, stress
